The NMRA And Holley Make A Really, Really Big Show

The 23rd running of the National Mustang Racers Association and the 3rd launch of the Holley Intergalactic Ford Festival were out of this world!

The Car Show featured beautiful Mustangs in front of the old school wooden roller coaster that is an icon at Beech Bend Park.

Enthusiasts have been coming to Bowling Green, Kentucky for over 20 years to watch some of the best Mustang and Ford Drag Racing anywhere, and each year just gets bigger and better. But this year’s extravaganza took things to new heights with the addition of several new events.

The variety of cars seen killing the cones on the Autocross course was legendary, early and late model Mustangs, vintage Fords, and even a Shelby Cobra.

Of course, there’s the NMRA Drag Racing Season Finals, but add to that all the activity on the big blue oval track including the 3S Challenge, Autocross, Drifting and more. Plus, the huge car show that extended to several areas, full of the most beautiful ‘magazine-worthy’ cars.

The Drag Racers got a lesson on car control when watching the Drift Cars do their tandem dance.

Don’t forget the Dyno Challenge, Countryside Cruise, Swap Meet and Burnout Contest, and this year’s biggest new addition, the Off-Road Experience! On top of all that was the weather, which threatened a full day of rain on Sunday, making it necessary to get it all done by the end of Saturday night. Whew!

The Dyno Challenge always draws a crowd, even more so when there’s a Shelby Cobra strapped to the Dyno!

The ‘Night before Eliminations thrash’ is a long storied happening at the NMRA Finals. Frank Varela’s transmission broke an input shaft on its last qualifier, and various racers and crew stepped up with parts, expertise and encouragement including (L to R) Thomas Briggs, Frank Varela, and Sean King, plus Dwayne James and John Urist. By midnight, the transmission was working perfectly, but upon first start on Saturday morning, a lack of engine oil pressure ended the attempt to make first round.
